Description: Here is an interesting object that I know very little about. It appears to be some type of scientific optical device in an acrylic housing with an adjustment knob on both sides. It was made by TRW, an early aerospace company that was purchased by Northrup-Grumman in 2002.Wikipedia says that (among other things) TRW built many spacecraft including Pioneer 1, 10 and many space-based observatories. It looks like they were involved with a little bit of everything from ICBM technology to the Mercury and Gemini missions and Titan missile systems. Founded in 1901, they shortened their name to TRW in 1958. Many former employees went on to work for the current SpaceX company. It is marked in the metal with “TRW 570-42”. Inside the housing is a largely black metal mechanical device. It resembles a binocular minus the lenses. There are two larger openings on one side and two smaller openings on the other side. These openings look like they might have once held lenses but are now empty. When the knobs are turned, the distance between the larger and smaller openings changes. If anyone out there knows more about this device, please let me know. The acrylic housing measures about 3 5/8” x 4 1/2” x 3 7/8” with an overall distance between the knobs at 5 1/2”. The knobs stand proud of the housing by about 7/8” on both sides. It looks like the acrylic box can be opened by removing three tiny screws but I have not done so. The only condition issue that I can see is what appears to be four spots of adhesive residue on one surface, possibly where protective pads once were located and are no more.See photos for overall condition and ask any questions you may have.
