Trend Write-On/Wipe-Off Double-Sided Large 22" x 28" Hundreds Chart Laminated

Description: This vintage, large, double-sided Hundreds Chart is brand new and in excellent condition! Even though it already had a write-on/wipe-off surface, I still laminated it for durability! This item comes from a smoke free home. I used a large hundreds chart and individual hundreds boards a lot in my kindergarten classroom during whole-group instruction and Math Centers. My students really enjoyed using them, and they are such a versatile math tool for teaching and reinforcing so many different math concepts. I used the hundreds chart to teach/reinforce the following concepts: 2-digit number recognition and value, counting by 1's, 10's, 5's, and 2's, number sequence, place value, number patterns, addition, and subtraction. Because it can be used in so many ways and at so many levels, it is an educational instrument that can grow with your child from kindergarten to 6th grade and even beyond! This reusable chart was made by Trend Enterprises, Inc. and has a copyright of 1993. I purchased it from a local teacher's store. It measures 22" x 28", so it is a very convenient classroom size and easy to see when demonstrating in a whole-group setting. This chart can be used with dry erase markers or write-on/wipe-off crayons. It is double-sided with ideas to explore mathematical concepts and a small hundreds chart reproducible on the back. This chart is great for teaching number order, place value concepts, number patterns, factors and multiples, and prime numbers. A hundreds chart is a chart with the counting numbers in order from 1-100, and it has a lot of fun uses. The write-on/wipe-off surface invites endless discoveries and hands-on practice sessions, for all ages! A hundreds chart has multi-age appeal and offers learning fun for all abilities, as there is something for everyone in all the activities that can be done with it. This chart can be used for group games, learning centers, and individual fun at school or at home! There are 4 different teaching ideas, with illustrations, on the back of the hundreds chart. The first is "Count And Explore". Under this, there are 3 subcategories. The first deals with introducing children to the hundreds chart by starting with group explorations. Reading aloud the numbers in the last column, children will recognize this as counting by 10's. Reading aloud the first column, children may note that this is also counting by 10's, since each number has one more ten than the number before it. It is suggested that children count by tens from the chart, beginning with 2, then 3, and so on to determine what the greatest number is in each column. It is also recommended that children figure out what the value of the number in the tens place is in each row and what the greatest number is in each row. The second subcategory under "Count And Explore" focuses on noticing patterns or relationships among the numbers. See if children can discover that all the numbers below 2 have a two in the one's place. Or, see if they can figure out that adding ten to a number yields the number directly below, or that subtracting ten yields the number directly above. And, the third subcategory under "Count And Explore" revolves around "skip counting". It is suggested that starting at two, adults have children count aloud every second number up to 100, then every third number, and so on. This is a fun way to introduce multiplication or encourage children who have difficulty grasping the concept of multiplication and multiples. The second teaching idea is "Find Common Multiples". Here, children are looking for common multiples with the help of the hundreds chart. They choose 2 numbers for which they want to discover common multiples. They mark all the multiples for the first number with one symbol or color on the hundreds chart. They then choose a different symbol or color for marking all the multiples of their second number. Next, they list the numbers marked with both, and these are the common multiples. For example, to find common multiples for 6 and 15, children would circle the multiples of 6 and cross out the multiples of 15, to find out that the common multiples are 30, 60, and 90. Children then repeat the above steps for any 2 numbers. And, for an extra challenge, they can find common multiples for 3 numbers! The third teaching idea is "Find The Least Common Denominator (LCD)". If children had fun using the hundreds chart to find common multiples, they will have just as much fun trying it in their search for least common denominators. For example, if children were to find the least common denominator for the fractions 5/8 and 7/12, they would start with the denominator (8) of the first fraction and mark or color its multiples up to 100. They would then choose a different mark or color and do the same for the denominator (12) of the second fraction. Children would find that 24, 48, 72, and 96 are the numbers on the hundreds chart that are common to both denominators. From there, they could determine that the smallest number common to each denominator, or the LCL, is 24. With that information, they can go on to figure out that 5/8 = 15/24 and 7/12 = 14/24. And, the fourth teaching idea is "Find Patterns". The hundreds chart is full of patterns, and finding them is so much fun! Patterns can be found reading numbers in any direction. For example, reading from 1 diagonally to the right yields the following pattern: 1, 1-2, 2-3, etc. Or, reading from 11 diagonally to the right highlights "doubles" or the multiples of 11. And, reading from 9 diagonally to the left yields digits with a sum of 9 every time. Or, reading the 5th and 10th column up or down shows that multiples of five end in 0 or 5. Children can explore rules by marking or covering all numbers on the chart with a 2 in them, with a 7 in them, that are multiples of 3, that have a factor of 4, or whose digits add up to 3, 4, 5, and so on up to 17. For example, numbers from 29 diagonally to the left show the pattern of the 2 digits adding up to 11. Or, numbers from 59 diagonally to the left show the pattern of the 2 digits adding up to 14. And, numbers from 89 diagonally to the left show the pattern of the 2 digits adding up to 17. Exploring patterns that show rules are endless! Children can be encouraged to make their own rules for others to try and test out. In the area of finding patterns, it is suggested that sometimes more than one rule on the chart be done to see how they overlap, but that it would be helpful to first cover or mark all the numbers for one rule before starting another. The handy, small hundreds chart reproducible should be taken advantage of as the above teaching strategies are explored. Children will enjoy being active participants by having their own hundreds charts for marking as mathematical discoveries are made! Hundreds chart ideas become great individual activities when teamed up with the reproducible. There are 2 extension activities, with illustrations, listed on the back of this chart. They are "Pentashapes" and "Find Primes!". In "Pentashapes", children explore arrangements of shapes using five squares. The rule is simple in that each of the squares must share a full side with at least one other square. An example of a pentashape is 1, 2, 12, 13, and 23. Another is 9, 17, 18, 19, and 29. Yet another is 44, 45, 54, 55, and 56. And, still another is 68, 69, 78, 88, and 98. There are a lot of possibilities. In this activity, children are challenged to see how many pentashapes they can find. For an added challenge, they can add the numbers within the pentashapes to find the sums. Children can see who has the pentashape with the smallest sum or the greatest sum, and they might also see if they can come up with two pentashapes with equal sums. In "Find Primes!", children are looking for prime numbers. A prime number is a number whose only factors are one and itself. To find primes, children start by circling 2, the first prime number, and crossing out all multiples of 2. They then circle the next unmarked number (3), and cross out all multiples of 3. Continuing on, they circle the next unmarked number (5), and cross out its multiples. Children keep going until the chart is used up. The circled numbers will be the prime numbers less than 100. As a former educator, I purchased many Trend materials for my classroom. They are high-quality items that kids love! I would highly recommend them to both teachers and parents. This large hundreds chart would make a wonderful addition to a kindergarten or primary classroom! It would also be great to have in a household with young children! I am hoping to find it a good home.
