TOWNSEND HOOK (and its 'sister' WILLIAM FINLAY) was built in 1880 and perhaps its special importance lies in the part it played in the formation of the Museum of industrial railway equipment at Brockham, near Dorking, in Surrey. The development of this important collection arose from the preservation of TOWNSEND HOOK and should ensure the survival for at least another 100 years of not only this locomotive but of many other items as well. I was particularly pleased to be asked by the Brockham Museum Trust to contribute this booklet towards the celebration of the Centenary. It is a development of a smaller booklet published by the Narrow Gauge Railway Society in 1961 with much additional material acquired in the interim. So much historical and technical information about the Betchworth works has come to light in the intervening years that it has been difficult to con-fine this booklet to a reasonable length and to concentrate on the narrow gauge railway system (throughout the booklet the term "narrow gauge" should normally be taken to refer to the 3ft 2kins gauge lines). Yet so much more remains to be discovered and pieced together, as the Dorking Greystone Lime Co. Ltd. (generally referred to as "the Company") was not a firm to rest on its laurels and during its 95 years of trading was continuously experimenting with new techniques and methods of production. The full story remains to be told in the future. All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
