In this play, which evidently combined several vendetta stories into one plot, the sisters Miyagino and Shinobu seek revenge for the murder of their father by the arch-villain Daishichi (disguised during part of the action as a palanquin bearer, Hototogisu no Gorohachi). The poet and ukiyoe scholar Yone Noguchi wrote, "This is a magical portrait.
