The one is an oban triptych depicting the dohyo-iri ceremony of Daidozan. He is shown on the central sheet, while the champion Tanikaze and four other wrestlers appear on the left-hand sheet, and Jimmaku and four other contestants on the right-hand sheet. In the other, a single- sheet print, also an oban nishikie, Daidozan is depicted trying to put out a candle flame with a thick checkerboard in his hand. The present print was discovered in 1945. The inscription on the picture indicates that the boy wrestler was seven years old, weighed more than 71 kilograms and was 1.4 meters tall at the time of his performance, which took place in 1794. Daidozan was a son of a farmer in the northern part of Japan and came to Edo to enter the sumo world. He took part in the sumō match but mainly performed the dohyo-iri, which is held during intermissions in the matches. He was so popular among the designers of ukiyo-e that nishikie picturing him were produced by Utamaro, Choki, Shun'ei, Shumman and other leading painters besides Sharaku. The present picture, being the only known impression, is similar in composition to the triptych design mentioned above, the only difference being that the wrestler is facing in the opposite direction and that there is a little suggestion of activity in his pose. The expression of the wrestler is more firm. However, the rendering of the uplifted leg is lacking in strength. This may due to the fact that the design is one of Sharaku's later works. The publisher's mark is not discernible, but it is presumed to be that of Tsutaya Juzaburo. ■Size・Height: 32.9cm・Width: 23cm◎When shipping, we will take care to avoid water damage, bending, etc.◎We will ship it quickly.
