Description: This oil painting was done by Sedona, Arizona artist Tom Ward. It shows the Montezuma Castle Indian Cliff Dwelling that's located in the Verde Valley of Arizona. The painting is signed in the lower right and dated 1983. It is also signed and titled on the back. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 20" high by 18" wide. With the frame, it measures 24" high by 22.5" wide. The frame is an attractive rustic grey wooden frame with a velvet fabric inset. There is a little discoloration on the velvet inset at the bottom, but not bad. The painting is in great condition.On December 8, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt celebrated the passage of the Antiquities Act by declaring four sites of historic and cultural significance as our nation's first National Monuments. Among these was Montezuma Castle, which the President identified as a place "of the greatest ethnological value and scientific interest." Montezuma Castle National Monument quickly became a destination for America's first car-bound tourists. In 1933, "Castle A", a 45-50 room, pueblo ruin was excavated, uncovering a wealth of artifacts and greatly enhanced our understanding of the Sinagua people who inhabited this riparian "oasis" along Beaver Creek for over 400 years.Tom Ward (1920-2016) lived in Sedona Arizona and especially enjoyed Plein Aire Painting. His work was featured in Arizona, California and Colorado galleries.
