Description: The book this etching comes from was a British reproduction of a Chinese painted book that came over earlier in the 18th century. This plate was printed, then watercolored by hand to embellish the scene. It is titled in the plate The Rice Manufactury in China: From the Originals Brought from China. This copy has no publisher or printer information, but most copies have London: Printed for T. Bowles in St. Paul's Church Yard, John Bowles & Son in Cornhill, & Robert Sayer in Fleet Street. The complete book had 24 plates, including the cover, engraved by John June after A.(gustin) H.(eckel). There is no date, but the publishers' names as listed on the other cover-pages give us an indication of dating. T.(homes) Bowles operated in St. Paul's Churchyard until 1763 when his nephew Carington Bowles took over the business. John Bowles was Thomas's younger brother. John's son Carington became a partner in 1752 or 1753 and for the next ten years they traded as John Bowles & Son. Robert Sayer, a major British publisher and print-seller, operated at the Golden Buck until, in the mid-1760s, and with the introduction of street numbering the address changed to 53 Fleet Street. Accordingly, this dates to 1762 or 1763 at the latest. Condition: very toned, with edge damage not affecting the image. In one photo I show a light shining through the paper, guaranteeing this is 18th century. Sheet is 14.5 by 9.5 inches. Image is 7.25 by 10. The complete book appears to be rare, and even odd plates are scarce in public libraries.
