Xiii + 323 pp., 97 photo-plates + 9 maps & some ills. Beside the main road from Bucharest to the famous oil town of Ploesti lies the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery. Included here are 80 British and Commonwealth airmen who died between May and August 1944 whilst flying night attacks with RAF's 205 Group from airfields in the Foggia Plain of Italy over South-Eastern Europe. 205 Group was the night-bomber component of the Mediterranean Allied Strategic Air Force. The men had lost their lives during the sustained day and night offensive against the Romanian oil industry and its distribution network, the transportation system supporting the German front in Moldavia and the mining of the Danube. Very little is known and even less has been published about these night-bomber attacks, unlike the well-chronicled daylight efforts of the American 15th Air Force. 205 Group, however, flew over 1,000 sorties against these targets. They delivered 1,200 tons of high explosive, countless incendiaries and laid over 260 mines in the Danube. The loss to the Group against these well-defended objectives was rated third after Berlin and the Ruhr and so their story needs to be told. The author's account of these operations is based on the contemporary official reports and intelligence assessments, fleshed out by the recollections of many of the men who were there, from all corners of the Commonwealth.
