In 1873 he saw William Henry Jackson's photograph of the Mount of the Holy Cross and soon embarked for the Rockies, where he undertook an arduous climb to witness and record the striking vista. A prominent mountain summit with a snow field in the shape of a cross, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow invoked it in an 1879 elegy to his late wife, Frances Appleton, writing: "There is a mountain in the distant West / That, sun-defying, in its deep ravines / Displays a cross of snow upon its side. / Such is the cross I wear upon my breast / These eighteen years, through all the changing scenes / And seasons, changeless since the day she died." It was declared a national monument by Herbert Hoover in 1929.
