NEW PLATES: At our count, there are 88 new plates bound in the two volumes. A preliminary hand list of subjects is provided below showing the subjects, publishers, and distribution of plates throughout the volumes. We believe the list can be substantially augmented through further research. 77 portraits, and 11 Landscapes/Interiors. Most subjects relate to fine arts during Thomas Gainsborough's career but do not necessarily illustrate the text of Whitley's book. Aquatints, sanguine prints, etchings, copperplate and steel engravings. Dates of publication from 1792 to 1888, meaning that most of the plates were produced well prior to the book publishing. Some plates undated, without publishers. Some plates only identified by research, with subject name penciled on versos. GRANGERIZATION: All craftsmanship appears highly competent...all frames aligned perfectly square, edges perfectly clean. Plates that were published near the time of the Grangerization (for example the series published by Henry Graves & Co.) are bound directly using the parent material of the plate. In the case of older plates, plates made from thinner paper, or smaller plates, the Grangerizer modified the plate to fit the volume. Here are the several techniques used: 1. Laying on a stiff card Pasted on to a heavy card, in some cases flush and sometimes with a tail edge or fore edge protruding generally no more than 1/2" 2. Full Inlay A process where a smaller plate is bevelled with a sharp knife and fitted and pasted to a similarly bevelled card frame. The resulting union of the print and the frame has a flush, compact surface. An excellent video of the process is available on the Huntington Library website at this address: 3. Cropping. About 7 or 8 prints are substantially cropped to allow larger portraits to fit inside the book. Some of these are also pasted on cards. All cropped plates are identified in pencil on back of card. PLATE IDENTIFICATION: The subject of almost every plate is clearly identified. Sometimes publishers are identified. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
