Description: PRIME MINISTER LEVI ESHKOL'S COMMUNICATION TO RAV-ALOOF YITZHAK RABIN Dear Yitzhak : The end has come to the six days of the glorious military campaign during which the Israel Defence Forces presented us with a brilliant victory unprecedented in our history. It is doubtless too early to sum up the achievements of the battle, in view of the political struggle confronting us at the moment. I can say, however, that these six days will in future generations be counted as supreme in the saga of the Jewish people. I should like to use this short interlude between the military campaign and the political struggle to express to you some of my gratitude and esteem for your character and your military leadership in this fateful campaign forced upon us by neighbors to the south, the east and the north. For the past four years, I have had the privilege of working on security matters, and we have worked together for 3½ years of this period. In summing up these years for myself, I can say that they were years of productive cooperation and great and blessed accomplishment whose fruits we are now gathering. During these years the I.D.F. grew in man- and firing-power, and went through many stages of reorganization and realignment which much increased its might. When the time comes to write the story of this six-day war, we shall take note of the essential factor: the organization of the reserve forces to combine with the regular army in the course of a few days into a tremendous shock machine was what tipped the scales toward victory. Mention must be made of the armored units and their commanders, who have since the Sinai Campaign worked toward the strengthening of the corps and its conversion into a mighty shock force. Our congratulations to the infantry, the navy and the paratroops who by their courage and ability broke the enemy fortifications. Nor shall we forget the role of the Intelligence Corps whose valuable information contributed to the success of the war. However, the contributions of all of them are not belittled if we say that the peerless crushing power of the Air Force was decisive. The nation owes no end of thanks to the daring pilots, all of them the best of Israeli youth. Not in a day was the Air Force designed and developed as the determining force in the skies of our region. Permit me then to transmit through you my thanks and tribute to Aloof Ezer Weizmann, for years among the designers and builders of the Air Force, and to Aloof Mordechai Hod, who conducted operations. Please convey our admiration and gratitude to the heads of command and the commanders of the divisions, brigades and all combat units. Service units at the front and rear are likewise party to our victory. We have just completed the military struggle. Our joy at the splendid victory is tempered with pain and sorrow for our dear ones fallen in battle. And we still have ahead of us the political struggle to ensure enduring peace and security. To the chronicle of heroism recorded since our original settlement in this country has now been added an illustrious and awesome chapter with no counterpart in other eras. I know that there is no comfort for orphans and widows and bereaved fathers and mothers, buf when we seek comfort, let us remember that we achieved the sacred purpose and exalted objective set before us. Sincerely, Levi Eshkol Prime Minister
