Description: The Trumpet Major: John Loveday, A Soldier in the War with Buonaparte and Robert His Brother: A Tale By Thomas Hardy The Folio Society London, England 1991 First published by The Folio Society in 1990. Introduction by Paul I. Webb. The Trumpet Major was first published in book form by Sampson Low in 1880. The text of this edition by The Folio Society follows the 1912 Wessex Edition, published by Macmillan & Company, Ltd., the last edition revised by Thomas Hardy. This edition by The Folio Society is set in Linotron Baskerville and printed on Monument Wove paper and bound in Regency Rayon blocked with a decorative motif, drawn by the artist, Peter Reddick. xvi, 314 p.: frontispiece and 19 in-text wood engravings by Peter Reddick (1924-2010), a prolific, well-trained, highly regarded British Quaker illustrator, known especially for his wood engravings for the 18 volumes of Thomas Hardy novels, including this title, published by the Folio Society, for whom he also provided the illustrations for the six volumes of Anthony Trollope's Barchester Chronicles, and 85 engravings for an edition of Wordsworth in 2002. He was a member of the Royal West of England Academy, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and the Society of Wood Engravers, and also helped found and served as chairman of Bristol's Spike Print Studio. 23 cm. (9 inches). Dark red cloth with gilt- on brown-stamped embellished spine title, and with light-brown and blind-stamped decorative motif on the front cover, also by Peter Reddick. Top page edges red. Color illustrated endpapers featuring "Map of the Wessex of the Novels and Poems." No dust jacket, as issued. Gray slipcase. First Thus, Third Printing "In the days of high-waisted and muslin-gowned women, when the vast amount of soldiering going on in the country was a cause of much trembling to the sex, there lived in a village near the Wessex coast two ladies of good report, though unfortunately of limited means. The elder was a Mrs. Martha Garland, a landscape-painter's widow, and the other was her only daughter Anne. Anne was fair, very fair, in a poetical sense; but in complexion she was of that particular tint between blonde and brunette which is inconveniently left without a name. Her eyes were honest and inquiring, her mouth cleanly cut and yet not classical, the middle point of her upper lip scarcely descending so far as it should have done by rights, so that at the merest pleasant thought, not to mention a smile, portions of two or three white teeth were uncovered whether she would or not. Some people said that this was very attractive. She was graceful and slender, and, though but little above five feet in height, could draw herself up to look tall. In her manner, in her comings and goings, in her 'I'll do this,' or 'I'll do that,' she combined dignity with sweetness as no other girl could do; and any impressionable stranger youths who passed by were led to yearn for a windfall of speech from her, and to see at the same time that they would not get it. In short, beneath all that was charming and simple in this young woman there lurked a real firmness, unperceived at first, as the speck of colour lurks unperceived in the heart of the palest parsley flower' [opening lines of the book]. Book is in Fine/As New Condition: pages and illustrations bright, clean, tight, and unmarked. Slipcase is in Fine/As New Condition: small indentation bottom edge barely noticeable.
