Description: The Saint of London: The Life and Miracles of St. Erkenwald by E. Gordon Whatley. SUNY at Binghamton, Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies, 1989. Both the Latin original and a modern English translation, with commentary, of the life and miracles of the legendary Anglo-Saxon saint. "St. Erkenwald was a former bishop of London whose reign began in 675 or 676, less than a century after St. Augustine's arrival in England. The first evidence about St. Erkenwald is found in Bede's Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, in which Bede notes that Erkenwald is the newly appointed Bishop of England, and that he has also founded two monasteries, one in Chertsey, Surrey and one in Barking, Essex. "The exact date of St. Erkenwald's death is unknown, but is presumed to be between 685 and 693. He was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral and then reburied twice, once in 1140 and again in 1148. Around the time of his reburial, many of St. Erkenwald's miracles were transcribed and added to an earlier biography about the bishop. This transcription led to a cult of Erkenwald, which celebrated at St. Paul's Cathedral until the early fifteenth century at minimum. Latin memorials of Erkenwald portray the saint as a supporter of sacramental Christianity and the ecclesiastical establishment, and this matches his depiction in the poem."
