The presentation of self in everyday life

Description: Originally published by the Social Sciences Research Centre, University of Edinburgh in 1956, the work is based on Goffman's doctoral dissertation research--ethnographic data collected while living in a subsistence farm community on Unst island in the Shetlands off the Scottish coast between December 1949 and May 1951. He revised and expanded the 1956 edition for the first Doubleday Anchor [mass market paperback] edition in 1959 [A174]. His 1953 University of Chicago doctoral thesis, Communication conduct in an island community, was eventually published by the nonprofit mediastudies.press in 2022 as the third monograph of their Public Domain series. The author's premise (set forth in the Doubleday Anchor preface) is that much social interaction can be interpreted as theater. Goffman was born in Canada, but lived in the United States for most of his adult life.
