THE PIANO SCALES

Description: Any instrumental didactic path (at least in the consolidated Euro-cultured tradition) bases its path on a strong, certain, practically indispensable point: the refined art of practicing scales in all ways. But transforming the dry exercise of up and down the keyboard of a piano into an intelligent and, in some ways, engaging training of the fingers and the corresponding "tactile memory" is not for everyone. Oscar Ossian Corradini has succeeded in his self-produced volume “The scales for piano - On the correspondence of the weight of the fingers for a perfect combination of the hands”, to create an orderly path, amply justified, in the short but clear preface. In essence, with intelligent references to the French school of Alfred Cortot, it is a question of teaching the fingers the habit of walking and subsequently running faster and faster. The methodology followed is agile and well suited to the needs. The privileged teaching tool is the study of fingering (written in all capital letters and bold, also in the author's preface), which is rational and tested in order to allow the achievement of only two but basic purposes: execution sureness and speed. The clarity of explanation and the organicity in the presentation of the materials (scales and again scales) make the book an (almost) indispensable mean that can help the teacher justify the hard work of "knowledge" proposed to the student. Among other things, some useful suggestions may also apply to the conscious and effective approach to the study of many other musical instruments: attention to detail, to the single harmoniously connected movements of the body, the interesting tricks proposed in the final exercise for the great speed. Preparation, execution, control: a path to be included in the study habits, from the execution of the "simple" one-octave scale to the climbing of the most inaccessible peaks of concert and instrumental virtuosity. "Pickaxe after pickaxe you have to build solid holds from which it is impossible to fall" says the author.
