Description: Full Title: The Pacesetter: The Untold Story of Carl G. Fisher, Creator of the Indy 500, Miami Beach & The Lincoln Highway Condition Continued: There is a group of pages mostly in the Notes section at the end of the book which have a tiny crease just below the tips of their top corners. And there is a little crinkling off the bottom edge (not reaching the print) of some later pages, mostly the ones in the Notes section and the Index. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. And there is no writing, excepting the author's signed inscription. Curiously, all the copies of this book that are listed for sale do not reference a dust jacket (these so-called 'New' books you see listed almost never have one). The dust jacket of this book is in pretty nice condition. It does have a small loss and scuff just off the top of the middle edge between the front cover and front flap. A tiny bit of this loss can be seen at the front top corner and the top edge of the front flap. The flaps are in very good shape, not clipped. The jacket is fitted with a protective cover. Lost Coast Press, Fort Bragg, California, 1998. Hardcover ion Dust Jacket. Written by Jerry M. Fisher. The book is a stated first edition-- however the Number Line goes down only to 2, so it appears to be a Second printing. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. The inscription is on the title page. It reads: 'Chris Gillian (or Gilliam, not sure), Hope you enjoy the book. My best wishes, Jerry Fisher 3-24-05.' From the jacket: 'Carl G. Fisher did not live the American dream-- he made the American dream. The dirt poor Indiana boy built his dreams into vast fortunes. He created the first Transcontinental Highway, built the Indy 500, developed Miami Beach, and Montauk, New York (known as the Miami Beach of the North. Now Jerry M. Fisher, a cousin of Carl's, has written his definitive biography. Fisher carved the playground of Miami Beach from the swamps of a mosquito infested jungle. He made Long Island a fashionable place to live. The Indianapolis 500 remains the world's premier racing event. The Lincoln and Dixie highways, awesome accomplishments for their time or any, brought the country into the 20th century the way the railroad brought the country into the 19th century. Presidents called him a friend; the Gasoline Alley Gang of Ford, Chevrolet and Firestone regarded him as a pacesetter. When Fisher drove the pace car for the first Indy 500 in 1911 he was not only setting the pace for that race, but for all Americans who were venturing onto highways.'From The Indianapolis Star, 4-Star Review: 'A fascinating book about a fascinating but forgotten man. Fisher doesn't white-wash his relative's faults or embellish his assets. This is a cards-on-the-table biography. The Pacesetter is heavily notated and draws on hundreds of sources to light the shadows of a marketing genius who shunned the spotlight. It takes Fisher through his quarrels with Miami Beach resident Al Capone, the liquor Fisher hid during Prohibition, the developer's fights with Florida antisemitism and racism, and the death of his only child, 26 days after the boy was born.'From David McCullough, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian: 'If the film ('Mr. Miami Beach'--the story of Carl Graham Fisher) has brought The Pacesetter more attention that's all to the good.'
