Description: Some wear to dustjacket but now protected by Mylar. Faint cigarette smell. Paul Hindemith was one of the most versatile of twentieth-century musicians. Best known as a prolific and highly successful composer, he was also a virtuoso performer on violin and viola as well as a conductor, teacher, and writer. This book by David Neumeyer is the first stylistic and technical study of Hindemith's music to make full use of current analytic systems. Neumeyer charts Hindemith's development from the early years of eclectic exper-imentation, through the neue Sachlichkeit of the 1920s, Mathis der Maler and the works that followed from it in the 1930s and 1940s, to the more difficult late music. The book begins with a new interpretation of Hindemith's compositional theories as expressed by him in The Craft of Musical Composition and other books and documents (some unpublished). Neumeyer then proposes his own analytic method that proceeds from Hindemith's concept of the cooperation and interaction of the three principal elements of music: melody, harmony, and rhythm. He uses this method, combining it with Schenkerian and pitch-class set analyses, to offer a fresh interpretation of Hindemith's early music and the well-known works of the middle period, in-duding Mathis der Maler; the Ludus Tonalis, and the revised Marienleben. Hindemith's star has been waning for about a generation; a fate also suffered by J. S. Bach after his death. This excellent, scholarly book should help restore some of the luster. The author, associate professor of music theory at Indiana University, uses such advanced interpretive methodologies as Schenkerian and Fortean analyses persuasively to critique Hindemith's work. While the complexities of the analyses may at times overwhelm lay readers, the prose style is engaging and comprehensible throughout. For music students, this book will be an essential source, as it fills a major lacuna in Hindemith studies. A detailed chronology is included.
