Description: The Lancaster was the most successful heavy bomber of World War II. Lancasters made no less than 156,000 sorties over enemy territory and dropped a total of 608,612 tons of bombs. This is the story of the Lanc and of the aircrew and ground staff who flew and maintained it. In first-hand, contemporary accounts and with over 200 photographs, many not previous published, the authors recall vividly what it was like to live on a bomber squadron in wartime. Here are the earliest Lancasters, their introduction into squadron service, maintenance problems and test flights. The reader is then taken on an operational sortie where ground crews are shown at work – often in atrocious weather conditions. Here are the armourers loading the guns, bombing-up and chalking messages to Hitler on their 4,000 lb 'cookies'; aircrews in the briefing room, preparing for the 'op', going out to the aircraft, making their pre-flight checks; here are the Lancasters standing quietly at dispersal, then starting-up, taxiing, taking-off, climbing, on the bombing run, landing, returning to dispersal. There are pictures of 'prangs', ditchings, flak and fighter damage, veteran 100-op Lancs – and Lancs with gaudy nose insignia. The book is protected with heavy-duty plastic protection (NOT attached to the dustjacket). There is a small sticker inside the book with previous owner's details.
