Partly inspired by Pennell's own experiences and family life. Joseph Stanley Pennell (1903-1963) was born in Junction City, Kansas, and moved to Seaside, Oregon, in 1947. Although he had planned a third volume for the Hanks/Beckham series, he only went on to publish one additional book, a collection of his poems entitled Darksome House, issued in 1959.
