Description: The idea of writing a book on the genus Hippeastrum (Amaryllidaceae) in Bolivia arose in the year 2005, on one of the innumerable occasions when the authors got together to share the longstanding friendship that united us. During those conversations, the topic almost always centered on the Bolivian flora. We had admired its exuberance and diversity during the multiple journeys we had made together; our thirst for new knowledge often left us frustrated at being unable to find much information in the existing literature specializing in our flora. At first, the idea was to write an article on the genus Hippeastrum, listing all the species found in Bolivia. Soon we had to realize that it would be possible to enlarge the basic information we had, to fill it out and to include a revision with all the known data on this genus in our country. After several years of study in the field, in herbaria, and in libraries, this idea now culminates in the first treatise on this material, which we have entitled The Genus Hippeastrum (Amaryllidaceae) in Bolivia: a descriptive, illustrated compendium of the 34 species native to this country.
