The Flash Comic Stuff Flash Comics began in 1939 and soon became a mainstay of DC's super-hero line. In issue #1, the world met Jay Garrick, a chemistry student who accidentally broke a container filled with hard (or heavy) water gases he had been experimenting on. The room filled with the strange vapors and Garrick barely managed to escape before losing consciousness. When he awoke, however, he found his body chemistry altered by the gas he had inhaled, and became transformed into the Flash, the fastest man alive. The series ran sucessfully until 1949 when it fell, a victim of the declining sales of super-hero titles. The Golden Age Flash appeared as a Justice Society member in All-Star Comics for a few more years, then vanished for more than a decade. Picking up the numbering from the Flash Comics, this (1st- 1960) series featured Barry Allen as the red-garbed speedster and Justice League member. Allen was the second person to take on the role of Flash, replacing Jay Garrick, the Flash of the Golden Age. During the run of this series, Allen squared off against countless colorful villians, including Professor Zoom, Gorilla Grodd, and the Trickster. The series is also notable for the introduction of the hero, The Elongated Man, as well as later witnessing EM's marriage to Sue Dearborn. As can be expected by adventures of The Fastest Man Alive, most of the plots revolved around super-speed antics, including time travel, running across water, vibrating through walls, and creating mini-tornadoes by The Flash whirling his arms at super speed. The series ended in the early 1980's when Allen was put on trial for the murder of Zoom, and Allen later gave his life to save the universe in Crisis on Infinite Earths. In 1987, DC launched it's second modern Flash series with a new face behind the red mask. The contemporary Flash, Wally West (formerly Kid Flash), was more cynical and not quite as fast as his Flash mentor, Barry Allen. In the early issues, Wally had a top speed of 705 miles an hour, which he could sustain for only a couple of hours before collapsing from exhaustion. The old Flash, by comparison, could travel faster than the speed of light, a power which Wally had shared only to lose it through a mental block. Eventually, Wally overcame his psychological speed limit and regained all of his former speed, even surpassing it by tapping into The Speed Force, a mysterious dimension that grants all DC's super-speedsters their powers. Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson's work remain the most memorable part of the series early years as they contributed most of the art in this run. The issues that follow are remembered as DC (National Comics) classics. Many consider this period of the The Flash titles to be the apex of the Silver Age, both in terms of art and storytelling. Here is an opportunity to own an affordable, super-high grade copy of these early Flash DC (National Comics) "classics", with only the most minor of imperfections allowable in this graded comic.
