Description: The Fishes of North and Middle America; a Descriptive Catalogue of the Species of Fish-like Vertebrates, found in the Waters of North America, North of the Isthmus of Panama - David Starr Jordan (1851-1931) and Barton Warren Evermann (1853-1932) - Bulletin No.47 of the U.S. Nat'l. Museum. Smithsonian Institution - Complete Four Volume Hardcover Set = First Edition - Over 3300 pages + 392 pages of b/w plates Notes: I rated this set in good condition. The volumes have aging and wear as expected. Toned pages. Cover rubbing. Some instances of more open binding between pages. Due to massive thickness, the binding isn't super tight; but the books are still in acceptable binding due to sewn binding of pages. All volumes have a book plate on inside cover; of Rear Admiral G.W. Baird, U.S. Navy (1843-1930). The pages are clear. No highlights, underlining, written comments or highlighting. I describe individual volumes below. Please view the photos for examples of content and condition. Thanks! FYI: For a First Edition, ~123 year old complete set, it is in nice shape. This is NOT the 1963 reprint and doesn't have the often found library buckram binding. I went through each volume and did my best to describe it. Volume Descriptions: Part I: 1896. A more open binding at title page; first end paper unbound; some creased corners; a page tear; foxing on top; some bottom page edge stains. Part II: 1898. Some page stains; foxing on side page edges.Part III: 1898. Small page edge tear; foxing on top; some bottom page edge stains.Part IV: 1900. A more open binding on a plate page; a bent corner; foxing on top; some bottom page edge stains; a few page edge tears. All Parts have descriptions of species; Part IV also contains 392 b/w plates. Typical Citation: Jordan, D.S. & B. W. Evermann. 1896-1900. The fishes of North and Middle America. Bull. U.S. Nat. Mus. 47, parts I–IV. 3313 pp. + 392 plates. Content Quotes: "The indispensable “Fishes of North and Middle America” (1896-1900), which for many years almost ended the study, since he and many others considered the subject largely completed." Editor/Author: David Starr Jordan (1851-1931) "During his lifetime Jordan was the dean of American ichthyologists...as an ichthyologist he involved himself in many taxonomic projects covering faunas ranging across the North American continent, and provided a philosophical context by supporting the Darwinian understanding of evolution. Over 1,000 genera and 2,500 species of fishes were named as a direct result of his activities. Jordan was a founding member of the Sierra Club. "Jordan's Law" in biogeography states that populations of most-closely-related species are separated from one another by physical barriers."
