Description: The First Night by Gilbert and Sullivan, 1958 This book is one of a group of books I am listing published by The Heritage Press. The title page states, “The First Night Gilbert and Sullivan Containing Complete Librettos of the Fourteen Operas, Exactly as presented at their Premiere Performances; Together with Facsimiles of the First-Night Programmes. Edited, with a Prologue and Copious Descriptive Particulars, by Reginald Allen and a Foreword by Bridget D’Oyly Carte. Illustrated with Contemporary Drawings.” This large hardcover book (8 ½ x 11 ½ inches, 465 pages) was published by The Heritage Press of New York dated 1958. The book is bound in green paper covered boards with a quarter spine in red cloth and an embossed floral pattern along the edge of the green. It also has a green oval tile with gold gilt title on the spine. There are b&w illustrations throughout. There is also a beautiful collection of programme's contained within a god box.Condition: This book is in very good condition. The gold sleeve and programme box both have some has some dark stains, discoloration, scratches, and edge wear. However, the hardcovers are in really nice shape. The back cover does have a few light marks on it. Inside, the pages are unmarked and clean and bright, from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact and the binding is tight and sound.
