These are getting very scarce nowdays CD Archived inside of a Protective Mylar 'flap-seal' Outer Bag (Removed for Photos) ONLINE REVIEW:When I happened upon this incredible CD a year or so after its release, I hadn't heard any publicity about it, so it came as a welcome surprise. And the most truly surprising thing about it, to this day, is that I believe it's right up there with McCartney's best work. It feels like new territory, a kind of "pocket symphony," to borrow Brian Wilson's odd but apt phrase. In the same year it was released, 1998, Linda Eastman McCartney had passed away, and that sad news informed my first listens. And in my heart, right away, I KNEW it was a kind of elegy. Looking back now, it's clearly different than the other 2 Fireman releases. Yes, it was still drone-oriented "ambient" music, but vastly more melodic. Great forces were at work deep inside it - it was like watching time-lapse footage of a desert blooming. Tiny brushstrokes, adding to a powerful whole. Linda herself appears in several places : you can hear her talking over the sound of horse hooves. I always got the impression these snippets were recorded at their Tucson hideaway, where she spent her last months. A familiar, comforting sound - the two of them riding along talking - had now become a thing remembered, never to be repeated. All this powerful emotion forms a kind of "landscape" music. The album takes its willing listener on a real journey, through a private place where deep grief is being transformed into creative work and beautiful, elegiac themes. After feeling this intuition about the album's origins from the first, I was recently struck, all these years later, to discover the following 2018 quote from Youth himself: "We recorded this album when Linda was in the final stages of cancer. She was also very involved in this project. She was very sad when she died. Listening to the album now, it sounds like a requiem for her and it's so beautiful." It certainly is. Once in great while, a record like this finds a lasting place in my life ...irresistibly beautiful. I'm grateful to have found it, and glad I was allowed time alone with it, exploring my intuition, responding to its power. RUSHES is a majestic work, full of emotional depth; it surprises and rewards with every listen.
