Description: "The Fighting Mascot: The True Story of a Boy Soldier" by Tommy Kehoe, illustrations by Clyde Forsythe. 1918 Dodd, Mead & Co. Apparent first edition (no edition or printing detail provided on copyright page). 249 pages with 4 black and white illustration plates (plus illustration on cover!). Hardcover, no dust jacket. According to the title page, this book is by the Boy Soldier himself, Thomas Joseph Kehoe, Rfm., No. 203144, 5th King's Liverpool Regiment. From the US WW1 Centennial Commission website ( https://www.worldwar1centennial.org/index.php/commemorate/family-ties/stories-of-service/5597-thomas-j-kehoe.html ), this was the only true account about the fighting in WW1 by a soldier that was published before the war was over. That website also explains how the story of a British soldier was published in New York, and what happened to Kehoe after the war. Very interesting. The illustrator, Clyde Forsythe, was known for doing war illustrations for "Boy's Life" magazine as well as creating an iconic War Bond poster. Around the time this book was published, he shared a studio with Normal Rockwell. His illustrations here are dark and foreboding. The book has a stamp on the inner front cover. The stamp says: "Dover, N.J. Special School Library Forty-Book Group". There are no other library markings I noticed in looking at the book, and it was in very good shape compared to typical library books, so this must not have received much attention. On the inner rear cover there is a sticker from what I believe was a used bookstore, closed now, called Roanoke Press - Croatoan Bookery in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. I recently discovered this book at a Goodwill in the Chicago suburbs. The book has gotten around in its 100+ years. See the photos for additional insight into content and condition of this true account of a 15 year old British soldier in World War One, a real piece of history.
