The author, Dr. Joseph du Bellet emigrated from France to Haiti during the early years of the nineteenth century, and later moved to New Orleans due to civil unrest in Haiti. He dropped the aristocratic "du Bellet" and became known as Joseph Pecquet. Pierre Paul Joseph Pecquet lived in France for much of his life, and tried to persuade the French government to assist the Confederacy during the U. S. Civil War. The book contains correspondence of du Bellet including a letter to the Confederate Secretary of State. We wrote as a propagandist in Paris in support of the Southern Cause.
