Sinister and comical, it probably gave Rod Serling the idea for a classic Twilight Zone episode starring Mickey Rooney. The author was a Roumanian Jew who emigrated to France, then England, and finally America. He became a noted historian with many non-fiction titles to his credit, but also a handful of novels.
