Description: Restored and improved reissue with extra songs etc. Review by Freek Kinkelaar Keyboardist Sheree Lawrence didn’t have a teenage head to hand at the time, but the rear sleeve pic of him holdinga cow’s heart in a refrigerator is still a joy to behold. Welcome to the early 80s: a time when you did everything yourself. And the Mice certainly did: between 1979 and 1989 they released 10 albums on their own Mole Embalming and Cordelia labels. This deliciously named album, their second, was originally released in 1981 and oozes with DIY brilliance: a mix of bouncy pop madness, improvisation and sound collage. The sleevenotes tell the story of the album, as recalled in detail by drummer Graham Summers, who reminisces about stark cellars (disguised as studios), endless discussions, surreal humour and the grandeur of the title track (an absurd mix of horror, sci-fi, goth and doo-wop balladry). There is a strong interest in original Mice vinyl, and even the 90s CD pressing of this album now fetches silly prices, so Cordelia’s timing is perfect for this reissue, and they add six bonus tracks. The Bandcamp-only release, Luton Conversion, has been made available, too, featuring over 50 minutes of additional outtakes from the Teenage Head… sessions. Singer/guitarist Alan Jenkins promises a full run of all 10 Mice albums, all on his private Cordelia label, showing off his still fiercely independent stance.
