Description: "The Complete Lurcher” by D. Brian Plummer, with black and white photographs and black and white illustrations throughout the book, illustrations by Martin Knowelden (including the cover). Published by The Boydell Press Ltd, (1979) 1982 3rd impression, Printed in Great Britain, hardback with dust jacket, 182 pages. This is the blurb by the publisher and the author on the inside cover of the dust jacket - "Brian Plummer's new book will need no recommendation to the many enthusiasts who enjoyed Modern Ferreting, Rogues and Running Dogs, Tales of a Rat Hunting Man and The Working Terrier. As to its subject, this is what the author himself has to say about it: 'If it is your wish to walk up a hare, with a dog on a slip, releasing the dog as the hare is given or denied law (depending on your idea of sportsmanship), allowing it to course the hare and then maybe kill it, I suggest you put this book back on the bookshop shelf and invest your money and time elsewhere. Should you, however, be that relic of the past, that almost extinct creature, the hunter, and should you require your lurcher, as Dan Russell once said to me, to have the body of a greyhound and the head of a Solomon to be capable of retrieving any quarry of suitable size, working long nets and gate nets, coursing and lamping, perhaps this may be the book you are looking for. You have one more chance to conserve your money and time and decide not to buy or borrow this work. The training programme is long and hard. The book has been written in tears, not ink. It is a list of my own errors, my own mistakes, with just a sprinkling of my own successes. It has been written by a man out of place in time, old-fashioned enough to expect a lot from a greyhound-blooded dog and is meant for similar out-of-place people. It has also been written in the hope that it may do something to prevent the lurcher degenerating into a poor-grade coursing greyhound - rougher of coat perhaps, but an animal no more trainable than the greyhound. You still have time to replace the book and disagree with my viewpoint, state that I ask too much from a coursing dog, still time not to spend the price of such a book. Decided to go on, have you? Well, yours the money and time, mine the advice. My work is, I admit, an odd mixture of folk legend which has been placed under the scrutiny of scientific tests. Some of the tests have been conducted by me, others by Brian Bloom in the United States. Do not let the word 'science' put you off, reader: hunting is itself a science. Decided to buy or borrow and read on, have you? Then as Shakespeare says, 'Damned be him that first cries "Hold enough"' - and this, reader, will be my first and last quote from Shakespeare, a writer with whom, my friends tell me, I am besotted.'" Excellent condition, small mark on back side of dust jacket.
