Description: THE COMPLEAT ANGLER; or THE CONTEMPLATIVE MAN'S RECREATION: Being a Discourse of Fish and Fishing for the perusal of Anglers by IZAAK WALTON: with Instructions, How to Angle for a Trout or Grayling in a Clear Stream, by CHARLES COTTON; and with an introduction by JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL Illustrated by DOUGLAS W. GORSLINE ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Hardcover no dust jacket; 316 pages; Size Approx. 7 3/4 X 11 1/2. Published by The Heritage Press; copyright 1948. BCE The Heritage Club Sandglass included. Details: "This book takes the form of a discussion, at first among the author, who calls himself Piscator, and Venator, who is a hunter, and Auceps (a Latin word, of course!), who is a fowler. Each of these three gents commends his own form of recreation. Auceps is soon silenced. Venator decides he wants only to learn how to fish. And then the discussion is a dialogue between Piscator and Venator. Piscator instructs his pupil in the mode of catching all the various kinds of fresh-water fish, with directions for dressing some of them for the table. There are observations on rivers and fish-ponds, and directions for the making of artificial flies and of fishing lines. All of this instruction is given as they fish along the river Lea near London, and there are many pleasing interludes of verse and song. But Izaak Walton, though he was a proficient angler, knew little of fly-fishing. Therefore, although the first edition was published in 1653 and the second edition in 1655, it was not until a fifth edition appeared, in the year 1676, that the text contained a continuation written by Charles Cotton, and this continuation takes the form of a dialogue between Piscator and Viator (Viator being a traveler who, as you could not have guessed, turns out to be the Venator of the earlier part of the book). They fish along the river Dove, that same river on which Wordsworth's tragic Lucy dwelt (She dwelt among the untrodden ways/Beside the springs of Dove,/A maid whom there were none to praise/And very few to love). In Charles Cotton's continuation, Piscator tells Viator how to fish for trout and graylings; and the two take every opportunity to discuss the picturesque scenery...." (from the Sandglass) The book has a hard cover binding with cloth spine; beautifully illustrated in black and white. The fore edge and the bottom or the text block is untrimmed. A fine addition for your bookshelf! Condition: Showing light edge wear; the surface of the front cover is lightly soiled; there are a few scratches on the back cover; the cloth spine is a little faded; there is a tiny tear on the back hinge; the lower corner on the back cover is showing through; the lower corner on the front cover is beginning to show through; otherwise the book is in good condition with a firm binding and clean pages.* * * * * * * * Note: The letter/number at the end of the title line for this listing is just an inventory code for locating the book. ______________________________________ Free Domestic Economy Shipping! For nearly all of our books, we use a specially designed boxing system from IPS (Inovative Packaging Solutions) located in York, PA. These media shipping boxes are designed to conform to the size of the book, securing it and preventing it from bumping around during shipping. The end result is a box which provides a double thickness of cardboard covering the front and back of the book; actually almost like a box within a box. The outer layer of cardboard extends beyond the ends of the inner "box" which very efficiently protects the corners of the book from being bumped and damaged by the sometimes rough handling packages receive in transit. In addition we place the book in a plastic bag to help guard against moisture if a package is left out in the elements.Delivery:We aim to get all books shipped within 24 hours of order except on weekends. We can't control the delivery time once a book leaves our hands, but most of the time USPS is prompt in delivery, and the expected delivery time given by eBay is usually fairly accurate. Because we use media mail to keep costs down, it does take a little longer for delivery, and occasionally packages get delayed in the mail system. If for some reason your order has not arrived within the expected time frame, please get in contact with us so that we can try to help you.
