Description: Title: The Brothers Karamazov-Author: Fyodor Dostoevsky-Publisher and Year: Macmillan, 1912 (NY)-Edition: This is the first printing of the first edition (in English), with the title page dated 1912. This is the American edition, which was co-released simultaneously with the UK edition. The relative quantity of the American and UK edition remains unknown. The original Russian edition is nearly impossible to find, commanding prices well into the five figures. -Condition and Description: Bluish-grey cloth boards, narrow blind-debossed ruled border on both boards, gilt lettering on the spine with the author and title surrounded by a narrow gilt ruled border, top edge gilt; octavo size (7 5/8" by 5 3/8"), pagination: [i-iv] v-vii [1, blank] 1-838 [1, printer's statement]. Hinges and binding tight. A small bookseller's stamp from the famous Old Corner Bookshop in Boston, the oldest commercial building in the city. A small note in pencil of "1.50 net" on the rear pastedown, which was the original price of the book, almost certainly written by the original vendor. Apart from this, and Dewson and Porter’s signature and blind stamp, the text is free and clear of writing and underlining. Spine gilt bight, though back strip tanned with staining on lower portion. Mild rubbing on boards. Minor spotting to text block. An excellent example with unique provenance. -Provenance (prior ownership): Feminist and Democratic political icon Molly Dewson and her partner, Mary Porter (signed on the front flyleaf 25 December 1912 and stamped on the title page). The couple bought a dairy farm in 1912 and spent Christmas that year pooling their belongings, including signing and blind stamping their books “Dewson Porter Farm” for their joint library (see “Molly Dewson, Feminism, and New Deal Politics,” 1987, p51). Molly Dewson was a pivotal figure in the successful campaign for the nation’s first minimum wage laws, the suffrage movement, and the presidential elections in the 1930s. In the 1920s, Molly befriended Eleanor Roosevelt, who subsequently elevated her role in the Democratic National Committee to head of the Women’s Division. Molly worked with Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt to recruit newly-enfranchised women into the Democratic coalition, ultimately helping the latter win the presidency. -“What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love.” - Feodor Dostoevsky, in The Brothers Karamazov- Inventory ID: 928 - 307 - 469
