Description: Everyone who cooks has heard of Fannie Farmer. Her original book was published in 1896; it was an immediate success. Fannie Farmer was unique in that she set out to make recipes logical and scientific. She wanted cooks to understand why a recipe worked. The approach was novel, and led quickly to reprints, revisions, and new editions. By 1929, when this cook book was printed, (4th edition, called the "New Boston Cooking-School Cook Book) there had already been, in only 33 years, 3 new editions, and one revision! And it didn't stop there: after the publication of this book, there were a total of 10 additional editions. In 1946, the 10th Edition was entitled: Fannie Farmer's Boston Cooking-School Cook Book, and continued to be a variation up until 1965, when the book was renamed simply: The Fannie Farmer Cookbook" (11th Edition). For the final editions (to date) Marion Cunningham was involved in the revisions, etc. In 1996, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary, the book was again reissued. Few cook book authors have influenced American cooks like Fannie Farmer. One might almost call her the Mrs. Beaton of America. But Fannie was very much a hands-on cook; and her recipes have stood the test of time beautifully. This copy is a good example of the transition. New recipes were included. And the book still contained many of the original features and recipes. I have a total of three of the Fannie Farmer Cook Books; this one, the one entitled the New Fannie Farmer (see my Vintage Category in my store, and the first Marion Cunningham version (12th Edition) which I am planning to keep forever. Her recipes are golden. Her instructions, even in the early works, are clear. This is not the best example of this edition, but it is readable, and usable, and a piece of history.
