Description: The Borrowers by Mary Norton; 1961 print; HC/DJ, Beth and Joe Krush ill., VG. The Borrowers was originally published in England in 1952, and in the US by Harcourt, Brace & Company. The novel was the first in a series of four released between 1952 and 1982. The book, which won Britain's Carnegie Medal for best children's book, tells the story of a family of tiny beings - the titular "Borrowers" - who live in a large house, borrowing what they need from the home's larger inhabitants. This copy is a later printing of the first US edition. The copyright code is K.5.61; my understanding (and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) is that the last digits are the year of publication. (This makes sense, since the publisher is listed as Harcourt, Brace & World, which was Harcourt's name from 1960-1970, when it became Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich.) This item is in excellent condition. The dust jack it present and in reasonably good order with bright colors. It shows moderate wear, especially along the top edges and spine. There are a couple of small rips and creases, but the body of the jacket is in generally good shape. The light blue cloth boards are also in good condition, with minor shelf wear and lightly bumped corners. There is a white spot on the front cover where the cloth has unraveled slightly. The spine and endpapers are fully intact and tight; the interior is clean and unmarked with bright white pages. Overall this is an excellent copy of an early edition of one of the 20th century's best children's books. All books are individually evaluated and photos are of the actual book.
