It was an unusual and exciting place to live in those days. In the years from 1920 to 1950, when boom was followed by the Great Depression, which, in turn, was followed by war and another period of prosperity, The Bronx grew from a rural and suburban hinterland of New York City to become a full-fledged part of the thriving metropolis. And we grew up with The Bronx. In those days following the First World War, millions of people--hard-working, family folk--poured out of the congested tenements of the Lower East Side, East Harlem, and other crowded sections of Manhattan and traveled the rails of the newly build subway lines northward (where most of the lines were elevated) to make a better life for themselves in The Bronx. Why did they come? Because it was "like country." Broad parks, empty lots, tree-lined boulevards, and open farms gave their families the fresh greenery and wholesome air they found desirable in order to raise their children properly. The newcomers brought with them a variety of backgrounds and customs, which persisted side-by-side with those brought by residents who had settled in The Bronx earlier. It was not uncommon for Irish children to play with Italian children, for Jew to be in the same schoolroom as Gentile, for black to be friends with white. Yet, in the midst of this growing cosmopolitanism, each family lived in a little village called a neighborhood, and each neighborhood usually was dominated by one ethnic group which helped determine the flavor of life for each of the thousands of us growing up in the beautiful Bronx.
