Original, Clean, Tight, Antique Wrap/Booklet Excellent Insights into Battle of Gettysburg; Contains a Map of the Battlefield THIS ORIGINAL WRAP WAS PPRINTED BY THE PRESS PUBLISHING COMPANY, NEW YORK, IN 1913 OUT-OF-PRINT, ORIGINAL, ANTIQUE WRAP DORNBUSCH III-2080 This extraordinary, scarce, first edition wrap/pamphlet presents a concise account of the Battle of Gettysburg. Fought July 1-3, 1863, the battle is often described as the war’s turning point. This excellent condition, antique wrap provides an account of the events of the battle. After his success at Chancellorsville in May 1863, General Robert E. Lee led his army through the Shenandoah Valley to begin his second invasion of the North – the Gettysburg Campaign. With his army in high spirits, Lee intended to shift the focus of the summer campaign from war-ravaged northern Virginia and hoped to influence Northern politicians to give up their prosecution of the war. Elements of the two armies initially collided at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, as Lee urgently concentrated his forces there, his objective being to engage the Union army and destroy it. The Union army defeat the Confederate effort and between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle. This detailed account provides insights to many aspects of the battle including marching toward the sound of the firing; how they talked; Reynolds, Buford, Doubleday and others; Howard becoming commander on the field; how a supremely important choice was made; Howard approves the choice made by Howard and von Steinwehr; lights out; Lee’s plan for the second day; how doth the little bee; how a sharpshooter missed a great shot; forces in position; the Peach Orchard; General Warren saves Round Top; the struggle on the right; the enemy captures and holds all nigh a part of our lines; Lee’s opportunity; the opportunity passes; preparing for great thing in the front; getting ready; two hundred and fifty cannon firing for an hour; who will launch this bolt of battle; who the fellows were; marching into immortality; the awful roar and the iron rain; how they looked; the canopy and haze of glory; they are half way; some are still alive at Cur line; so dies a wave along the shore; what might have been “if”; General Lee as he looked that day and felt that night; and fate sometime take a man at his word. FINE CONDITION This scare, first edition wrap/pamphlet is in excellent condition. It is in uncommonly nice condition and is clean and tight. It has no writing, smudging or foxing and the pages are in excellent condition. The exterior show normal aging, but is in great shape.
