Description: A classic magazine from the first half of the 20th century! This is the December 1932 issue of The American Magazine (“Something for Every Member of the Family”). It features a painted cover by John E. Sheridan of a woman holding Christmas holly. The cover highlights the article “General Pershing on What Makes a Leader.” The issue contains a mix of fiction by leading authors of the period, articles and features (see photos). There are black & white illustrations, black & white photographs and a wide array of vintage advertisements (both black & white and color). General of the Armies John Joseph Pershing, nicknamed "Black Jack," was a senior United States Army officer. He served most famously as the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I from 1917 to 1920. In addition to leading the AEF to victory in World War I, Pershing notably served as a mentor to many in the generation of generals who led the United States Army during World War II, including George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley, Lesley J. McNair, George S. Patton and Douglas MacArthur. John Emmet Sheridan (June 14, 1877 – July 3, 1948) was an illustrator well known in his lifetime for his cover art for The Saturday Evening Post and The American Magazine, his illustrations for Collier's Weekly and Ladies' Home Journal, and his commercial advertisements. He is "credited with the idea of using posters to advertise college sports." Sheridan was a member of the Dutch Treat Club, and a frequent contributor to the program of their annual banquet and show, and was an instructor at New York's School of Visual Arts at the time of its founding. The magazine contains 140 pages and measures approximately 8.75 x 11.5 inches. The issue is quite heavy; therefore the shipping cost is higher than normal. (You will see my left thumb in nearly every photo – holding the magazine so that it doesn’t close. That's because the magazine – while decades old – is in great condition and likely hasn't been opened since the first owner looked at it all those years ago!)
