ANDREA MANTEGNA The Agony in the Garden (Detail of Plate 7) Mantegna's The Agony in the Garden (Plate 7) is signed OPUS ANDREAE MANTEGNA on the rock behind the sleeping disciples. This is plainly legible in our print of this detail (Plate 1, p. ). There, too, we can see that the artist assuredly painted the recumbent figu es from drawings of models actually asleep; for without impinging in any way on the lyrical atmosphere which pervades this part of the picture, he has shown the sleepers with their mouths open and their frames in attitudes well known to Henry Moore and others who studied the sleepers in the London Underground stations in the war years; the hand on the salmon-tinted book seems to me not quite as veracious as the other details; but the colour of this pale salmon note is, on the other hand, a vital link in the colour chain which rises from the yellow, through this passage, to the deeper salmon on the left of the group and to the scarlet passage in the centre and without this link the others would not cohere. The details shown in our Plate 8 opposite, also repay scrutiny. Here we have, as it were, a close-up of the distance in the right-hand corner—part of the city from which the multitude emerges and beyond that an undulating landscape ending in blue mountains against a blue-green sky. The date of this picture is not known. But, as noted in the Introduction, its characters are those of Mantegna's most passionately felt and fearless concepts before he degenerated at the Mantuan court; some students have indeed assumed it to be a work which he is known to have painted for the Mayor of Padua in 1459 just after he completed the predella panels of the S. Zenone retable; but this cannot be proved as the subject of that 'little work' (operetta) is not mentioned in the letters from Marquis Ludovico to the Mayor and to Mantegna which refer to it. Nothing is known of the picture's early history; in 1841 it was in the collection of Cardinal Fesch in Rome, and it appeared in the Fesch sale in 1845; after passing through various collections it was bought by the National Gallery from Lord Northbrook for £1,500 in 1894.
