Description: We are offering the 4-page printed speech - The Abolition Schemes of Negro Equality Exposed. Speech of Hon. W.A. Richardson, of Illinois, in the House of Representatives, May 19, 1862. This speech, to the House Chairman, was regarding the abolition of slavery, and equality and rights of citizenship to slaves. Among other things, Richardson spoke of his opposition to Republican Party abolitionists who desired a sudden and unconditional emancipation of the black race, which he believed would be destruction to both the negro and the white man. He believed there should be a gradual emancipation of the black slaves. Richardson cites many reasons for his position. Richardson also opposed the use of Federal funds to clothe, feed and employ fugitive slaves, which according to his statement "had added $1,000,000 to the National debt, and a tax of $73,000 to be paid annually, as interest upon the sum, by taxes imposed upon the laboring white people of these United States". He states that much of what was being done was unconstitutional. Obviously, there is much more than we could possibly write about.
