Description: Taras Shevchenko. "Small Book", small gift format, 1986. Rarity Small book, 1846 – 1850. “The Small Book” is a handwritten collection of poems by Taras Shevchenko, created in 1846 – 1850. This manuscript has no title; the name “Small Book” was given by the researchers. While in exile, Shevchenko, despite the royal ban, did not stop writing poetry. He wrote them down in homemade small notebooks that could be hidden from his superiors. At the end of 1849 - beginning of 1850, while in Orenburg and having relative relief from soldier drill, Shevchenko began copying these poems outright into homemade notebooks of 6.3 × 9.8 cm format. There were 27 such notebooks. Warned of the arrest (which occurred on April 23, 1850), Shevchenko gave this little book to Karl Gern. The rough autographs from which the texts were copied into the “Little Book” were not found - apparently, Shevchenko managed to destroy them. Gern was able to return Shevchenko's manuscript, apparently at the beginning of 1858, when the poet was in Nizhny Novgorod. At this time (in January - February 1858), apparently, most of the corrections in the texts were made, some of the texts were crossed out. These edits reflect the next stage of Shevchenko’s work on his poems. On February 21, 1858, Shevchenko began to rewrite poems from the “Small Book” into the “Big Book”. When binding the “Little Book”, individual notebooks were mixed up, as a result of which the chronological order of the works was disrupted. This confusion was subsequently reinforced by continuous page numbering. Now the manuscript of “The Little Book” is kept at the Institute of Literature. T. G. Shevchenko (department of manuscripts.
