This recording titled "Latin American Classics" is really one of the best recordings I've heard from him. The orchestra that appears here are the New World Symphony Orchestra, which is a youth orchestra assembled by MTT himself. Don't let the word "youth" fool you. These young players can play and certainly give the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela a run for their money, but both orchestras are fantastic, especially in this repertoire. This recording starts off with Carlos Chavez's "Sinfonia India," which is a brilliant piece of music. The rhythms and harmonies are very intriquing. Chavez actually wrote this piece with his own native people in mind. He is actually referring to the "Indians" of his country Mexico. It's a great piece of music. Another highlight for me was Revueltas' very popular "Sensemaya," which is a very barbaric, ritualistic type of piece. I heard someone say it's like a Mexican "Bolero." I would agree, but this piece blows the weak "Bolero" out of the water. Sorry I had to say it! Another highlight was Ginastera's "Estancia" ballet suite. This is also a very aggressive piece that's full of energy. There are also some lesser known works here by Roldan and Caturla that are quite fine. The whole disc is thoroughly enjoyable. The playing and conducting are consistent throughout (a rare feat for MTT) and the audio quality is excellent.Copland* / Ginastera* / Piazzolla* / Roldán* / Chávez* - The New World Symphony*, Michael Tilson Thomas – Tangazo (Music Of Latin America)Label: Argo (2) – 436 737-2Format: CD, AlbumCountry: USReleased: 1993Genre: ClassicalStyle: Modern1 Sinfonía India (Symphony No. 2)Composed By – Carlos Chávez12:222 Danzòn CubanoComposed By – Aaron Copland6:53Suite De "La Rebambaramba"Composed By – Amadeo Roldán(8:56)3 Final Del Primer Cuadro 1:524 Comparsa Lucumi 2:535 Comparsa De La Culebra 2:296 Final De La Obra 1:347 SensemayáComposed By – Silvestre Revueltas6:31Tres Danzas CubanasComposed By – Alejandro García Caturla(8:19)8 Danza Del Tambor 1:219 Motivos De Danzas 5:3610 Danza Lucumi 1:1711 Rítmica VComposed By – Amadeo Roldán2:4212 TangazoComposed By – Astor Piazzolla14:27Danzas Del Ballet "Estancia," Op. 8aComposed By – Alberto Ginastera(12:53)13 Los Trabajadores Agricolas 3:0214 Danza Del Trigo 3:5715 Los Peones De Hacienda 1:5316 Danza Final (Malambo) 3:52Conductor – Michael Tilson ThomasOrchestra – The New World Symphony*We offer combined shipping for one low shipping charge.
