Tamara Aladin Tamara Aladin (August 14, 1932, Hamina – March 9, 2019, Hamina) was a Finnish designer and glass artist, known for her distinctive creations for Riihimäen Lasi. Aladin graduated from the School of Industrial Arts in the mid-1950s, specializing in ceramics. She worked for Riihimäen Lasi Oy from 1959 to 1976. During her time with the company, she designed both household glassware and export models, which were particularly sold in Germany. More than half of the vases produced by the factory in the 1960s were designed by Aladin. Some of her most famous pieces include the Kehrä vase, which was produced from 1968 to 1976, and the Koralli series, which was in production during the 1970s. Aladin designed over 150 different items under her own name for the company, although the actual number is higher because some of her designs were made anonymously. In addition to Riihimäen Lasi, Aladin also designed glass bottles for Marlboro. Aladin left glass design in 1976 when Riihimäen Lasi ceased its production of blown glass. She lived and worked in Hamina. In addition to her career as a designer, Tamara Aladin also worked as a flight attendant on Aeroflot's Moscow route for a few years. She served as a Russian-speaking liaison in the cockpit, translating communications between the pilots and air traffic control. She was the daughter of the merchant counselor Konstantin Aladin Jr. and Stella von Wershenski. Riihimäki glass, Finland Riihimäki glass (Finnish: Riihimäen lasi) was a glass company in Riihimäki, Finland, in operation from 1910, when it was founded by Mikko Adolf Kolehmainen, to 1990. Their production ranged from basic to high quality glass ornaments, which are now sought after as collectibles, especially some of their vases. Riihimäki products are readily available via collectors' web sites, as are their values. It produced everyday glassware and art glass until 1976 and cut glass until 1977. After that, it made only machine produced glass and plastic packaging. Ahlstrom Corporation purchased the company in 1980, and closed the Riihimäki plant in 1990.
