Description: There are many fanciful versions of Guro masks made for the tourist trade, I think because they tend to be quite colorful. I believe this is real. The patina is just gorgeous: deep russet red with a granular surface. The face, especially, looks like the color is considerably mellowed from time and use. It has carved raised scarifications on the forehead and cheeks, yellow lips and pointed teeth, a thin goatee-like beard and an elaborate hair style with a chip-carved comb (remember Afro picks to tame your Afro?). The only condition issues are a small break in the comb handle (last photo), which is not visible from the front, and two attachment holes that have torn out from repeated lashing.Including the comb and beard it is 21" tall. This is a beautiful example! I do not sell or ship internationally. [Boston Primitive]See plate 37 in "African Masks: The Barbier-Mueller Collection" for a very similar mask.
