Long term storage of lures with tubing (or most man made materials) can damage the paint. Most of what I sell is consigned and I only have it a short time. I don't normally renmove them dang tubes since I only have the lures a short time and removal can be tricky and time consuming.. plastic tubing "protectors" that have ruined more lures than they ever saved. Folks selling tubing will tell you it is safe, but will they be around in 20 years? Besides tubing is ugly! Why does the Ol' Cap get so many bids?
