There is wear to the edges and corners of the covers, as well as the top and bottom of the spine. There is a dent in the fore-edge of the back cover. There is some scuffing on the covers. There is wear to the hinges of the front and back covers. The front cover's hinge has been mended neatly on the inside. The back cover has separated at the hinge, but remains attached. There is a small sticker on the inside front cover for "The Aldredge Bookstore, Dallas." There is occasional foxing. There are no bookplates, ink names, or pen/pencil notations. All 13 of Leech's color plates are present - see photos! John Leech (1817 – 1864), a British caricaturist and illustrator, enjoys enduring fame as the first illustrator of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. During his life, Leech was best known for his work for the humor magazine Punch, combining verbal and graphic political satire with light social comedy. Leech's critical yet humorous cartoons on the Crimean War helped shape public attitudes toward heroism, warfare, and Britons' role in the world. Robert Smith Surtees (1805 – 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer, widely known as R. S. Surtees.
