Description: SUPERB NOVELTY STERLING SILVER TEA CADDY FASHIONED as a GEORGIAN KNIFE BOX - 1898 This is a stunning Sterling Silver novelty Tea Caddy fashioned in the form of a George III knife box made by the noted Sheffield silversmiths Walker & Hall Ltd. and was assayed in Birmingham for 1898. In good heavy gauge silver, it is depicted in a slope lidded form with cantered and scalloped corners, while the hinged lid has an ornate folding loop handle, and the interior is finely gilded. The caddy shows hardly any signs of wear, which is a pity as the photographs don’t do it any justice because the highly polished surface has picked up a lot of reflections and do no favours at all for such a nice object. The full hallmarks for the above maker and assay are crisp and clearly struck to the base and (part ramp) to the lid interior. It measures 3 1/2" (9cm) H x 2 1/2 (6.5cm) W x 2 3/8 (6cm) D and weighs 145 gms approx; and is in really excellent condition with no defect of any kind to report, although if you were very, very picky there is a very small very shallow knock to the base edge- it’s so unobtrusive the camera hasn’t picked it up. The caddy looks to have been hardly, if ever, used and was probably a cabinet piece for a great deal of its life. This is a really superb period sterling silver novelty tea caddy made by a good silversmith that's in excellent condition and with a low start price should have a great appeal to all collectors.
