This is a thin stock Promotional card produced by the former Classic Sports Network before it was purchased by ESPN and became what is now know as ESPN Classic. Back of the card reads "On May 25, 1965, Muhammad Ali retained his heavyweight title by knocking out Sonny Liston in the first round. Ali's decisive blow was dubbed the "Phantom Punch", for there was much speculation as to its true impact". "Do you want to see Ali float like a butterfly and sting like a bee? I was lucky enough to be part of the move after the network was purchased back in 1999, moving all the inventory from New York City to ESPN Headquarters in Bristol Connecticut. We found a few of these 6 card sets in a back room closet along with a vintage Joe Namath Jersey. We brought them to the people in charge and all they wanted was the Namath Jersey so I was the one who ended up with these hidden gems! I sold a couple random cards from the sets a few years ago on Ebay and people went crazy! Apparently, the true individual player collectors had never even seen or heard of these before! I was shocked! I didn't expect to get hundreds of dollars for them, but I was sure glad I did. I also did some investigating and was told by a big time collector from New York City that these cards were part of some sort of phone call-in giveaway or promotion event. Not sure if this is true, but he did seem to be very knowledgeable. Besides that one card dealer, nobody else from the hundreds of dealers at the Sportscard convention in NYC had ever seen these and they all were intrigued by them. There were 6 cards that were part of this "Classic Sports Starting Lineup Card Set". They included, Gordie Howe, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Wilt Chamberlain, Sandy Koufax and Mary Lou Retton. Unlike most of the cards I found, this Ali card is in Nice shape. Good corners with a nice unscratched surface, overall a NRMT card. So that's it.....here is your chance to grab this rare find now!
