Size: 9 7/8 x 7 inches ISBN or LCCN: na Description: Unusual personally bound copy of Sunset Magazine, Vol. XX, April, 1908, No. 6 featuring the rebuilding of San Francisco following the fire of 1906. The title page reads, “San Francisco Two years after a series of Pictures that tell the story of the City’s marvelous renascence from photographs by H.C. Tibbitts, decorations by Randal Borough." Included is the 48 inch fold-out of Tibbitts' panoramic view of the newly restored cityscape titled, “San Francisco today, as viewed from Rincon Hill, showing the remarkable results accomplished since the great fire of April, 1906.” The rest of the magazine is filled with Tibbitts’ detailed shots of specific buildings and areas of San Francisco. Also, bound in at the front is a copy of, “The Earthquake of April 18, 1906, and the Great Fire in San Francisco on that and Succeeding Days – Personal Experiences, inauguration of Red Cross and General Relief Work. Honorable William W. Morrow, United States Circuit Judge and President of the Red Cross.” Apparently the cover of the Sunset Magazine was never bound in. The bound in Red Cross booklet represents the remembrances of the president of that organization, William M. Morrow and is uncommon. Howard Clinton Tibbitts maintained a San Francisco studio having established himself with his fine landscape views of the West including some panoramic images. Much of his work was published through Sunset Magazine and his images can be found in the collections of Arizona State University Archives Tempe, the Berkeley Bancroft Library Archives, the Santa Fe Museum of New Mexico Photographic Archives, the Heard Museum Library and Archives, the California Historical Society and many more. His views of the earthquake and fire damage as well as the rebuilding are an important record of San Francisco history. Send questions.
