HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Nicolas Sanson (December 20, 1600 - July 7, 1667) and his descendants were the most influential French cartographers of the 17th century and laid the groundwork for the Golden Age of French Cartography. Sanson was born in Picardy, but his family was of Scottish Descent. He studied with the Jesuit Fathers at Amiens. Sanson started his career as a historian where, it is said, he turned to cartography as a way to illustrate his historical studies. In the course of his research some of his fine maps came to the attention of King Louis XIII who, admiring the quality of his work, appointed Sanson Geographe Ordinaire du Roi. Sanson's duties in this coveted position included advising the king on matters of geography and compiling the royal cartographic archive. In 1644 he partnered with Pierre Mariette, an established print dealer and engraver, whose business savvy and ready capital enabled Sanson to publish an enormous quantity of maps. Sanson's corpus of some three hundred maps initiated the golden age of French mapmaking and he is considered the 'Father of French Cartography.' NOTE: These engravings are offered at clearance price for historical interest and study. _________________________________________ Important Note about condition: Each print is spot-glued (in a couple spots - top and bottom) to the album page in which it was mounted more than 150 years ago. The print does not lie perfectly flat due to the laid paper and its attachment to the paper backing. As a result, the photo can cause areas of shading to appear, which are not really there. However, these prints do have occasional foxing and other faults. These are very rare 215+ year old copper plate print images of famous individuals rarely seen in portraits and well worth consideration. Prints are priced to sell as a great piece of 200+ year old history. I don't use the word "rare" often, but it does apply to these engravings. Each print is a really nice copper plate print on medium-weight laid paper. The literary work in which it was originally published is quite rare and an example was offered in Sotheby's Manuscript Auction in 2003. The individual portraits are very sharp and highly detailed. Represented are the most important men and from all nations of the world who shaped pre-1800 history (from ancient times to the later 1700s) , many of whom are rarely available in portrait form. This print(s) is one removed by someone c1910 from their original volumes and placed in an album. I have seen only a few of these prints in European antiquarian print shops before, selling at prices in excess of $25. Please visit my store for other prints from this series. I will be adding only a few of these each month to my store. So, If you are interested in a specific person, please contact me. CONDITION General age toning; minor foxing Please INSPECT PHOTO. <
