Description: Truly unusual and rare, a pair of American Roma (Gypsy) cuffs. These bracelets are handmade from melted gold coins and other gold jewelry by the Roma's so it's gold contents are varied. They used some of the oldest techniques of goldsmithing. The flowers are made using Repoussé, a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. The technique of Chasing or embossing is a similar technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, sinking the metal. Chasing can be seen running along the scalloped edges. The center of the cuff is a horseshoe with a synthetic ruby with a bevel setting. (Roma's always used synthetic rubys) The symbol of the horseshoe is often associated with good luck and protection against evil forces. Some believe that when a horseshoe is hung above the door or worn as a talisman or pendant, it brings good luck and repels negative energies. This is the story of how these cuffs came into my family. Carl and Jr used to walk down to the old part of Chicago. He took me down there to eat a couple times. He got to know this guy who said he was the king of the gypsys. Over time Uncle Carl got this gypsy to sell him this stuff. That is why it's so special. When the gypsys would pull into town they would set up their wagons. If one in the group needed medical care, they would take a piece of their jewelry to a pawn shop to get money. Then while they were in that town they would earn enough money to take their pieces out of pawn. Very smart way to carry currency. The ‘rubies’ are actually garnets. If they took the jewelry to pawn they could not be certain that the shop wouldn’t trade out the ruby and put a garnet in it. Uncle Carl knew this guy. It is very special stuff that he acquired in the 1960’s The cuffs were worn by women having one cuff on each arm. While the cuffs look identical, they are slightly different with one weighing a bit less than the other. The total weight is 124.6 grams. Jewelry was, and often still is, an important asset and an inherent part of Roma cultural history. This beautiful Roma jewelry is difficult to find. Much of it sold as scrap gold to be melted down, or it is an object to be handed down through generations of family as a treasure. Cuffs may be purchased separately. Inside measurement approximately 5.5". Cuffs easily fits a 7" wrist.
