Studio Pottery 3.75" Tea Mug off-white with brown etching, marked SJB

Description: Studio Pottery 3.75" Tea Mug off-white with brown etching, marked SJB Not Dated I Almost Kept This One... An extremely nice 3.75" tall tea mug with approx. 1 cup capacity. The finish is a grayish off-white color that is similar to a Colonial White glaze, but this has a bit more brown in it. The cup has a sgraffito (etched into the color) botanical design of leaves and vines on one side, and more random scrolls and twirls on the other side that reminds me of the way kudzu vines grow! The decoration also includes swags made of hash marks around the sides, and a series of diagonal slash marks around the top rim. The glaze is the same inside and outside, with the exception of a brighter white glaze around the top rim of the cup. The white glaze ends very evenly at the bottom rim with no drips or puddles off the mug, and the bottom shows the cut lines where the cup was cut from the pottery wheel with a wire. The piece is signed SJB or SJ3, I wasn't quite sure, and the monogram doesn't show up in The Marks Project index of contemporary studio potters. This cup is 3.75" tall and has no handle (thus, referring to it as a tea mug: this would be a fantastic mug for making matcha green tea.) The top is 3.5" across and the bottom is just slightly smaller at about 3-3/8". Note that the body of the mug curves in and then out, so the mug holds less than you'd think by looking at it from the outside. My #1 comment about this piece (and why I want to keep it!) is that it just feels great in the hand! It seems to be just the perfect size and shape for holding with one hand while drinking tea.
